Shop at Dollar Tree – Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 2 – .25-oz. Packages of Active Dry Yeast
  • 2½ Cups of Warm Water
  • 2 Teaspoons Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 7 Cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon Cornmeal
  • 1 Egg
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Small Mixing Bowl
  • Electric Mixer
  • Basting Brush
  • Baking Sheet

Easy Step-by-Step Directions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the yeast with warm water. Let the mixture stand until the yeast activates and puffs up.
  2. Add the oil and salt to the yeast mixture. Using an electric mixer on medium speed, mix in the flour ½ cup at a time. Mix until dough just pulls together and be sure to not over-mix!
  3. Once the dough has formed, place it on a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth (see image #1).
  4. Coat a large bowl with oil and place the dough into the bowl. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
  5. Punch the dough down to release the air (see image #2) and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a small 4" ball.
  6. Grease two baking sheets and sprinkle them with cornmeal (see image #3). Place four loaves on each baking sheet and cover the loaves. Let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 400°. In a small bowl, beat together the egg and a tablespoon of water. Brush the loaves with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Cool loaves on wire racks (see image #4).
  9. To make the bowls, use a serrated knife to cut a 3" circular hole in the top of each loaf (see image #5). Remove the circle and scoop out the centers (see image #6). Fill the bread bowls with soup and serve!
